About TMJ

Connecting your jawbone to your skull, the TMJ acts like a hinge. Any disturbance to that hinge — be it an injury, arthritis, or bruxism — no matter the severity, can cause a TMJ disorder. The parts of the bone that interact in the joint are covered with cartilage and are separated by a small disc. This disc helps keep the hinge action smooth and allows for a second motion: translation, which is a sliding motion that makes chewing, talking, and yawning possible. In severe cases, that disc can erode or move out of place, causing excruciating pain. With chiropractic treatment of your TMJ, freedom from pain is possible.

TMJ Treatment | Total Spine Health and Injury Center

When you visit our Maple Grove chiropractor for TMJ treatment, we work to address your condition and eliminate your pain through a variety of treatment strategies. In TMJ injury patients, we focus our chiropractic care on a number of different muscles, joints, and bones that are all directly related to the jaw. In addition to education and lifestyle advice, our primary strategies for addressing TMJ conditions include adjustments to the jaw and upper vertebrae and soft tissue manipulation. When targeting muscles through soft tissue techniques, we specifically work on loosening up and relaxing the masseter, the temporalis, and the pterygoid muscles. These three muscles are key to TMJ and any jaw pain. After reducing tightness through this soft tissue work, we will evaluate the alignment of your jaw and spine and perform the necessary adjustments, leaving you with lasting relief and full use of your jaw. Surgery is a last resort for TMJ disorders. The great majority of TMJ issues are corrected via chiropractic care. We do it all while avoiding pain pills, injections, or surgery. All treatment at Total Spine is specially designed to address the underlying cause of your TMJ, whether that's stress, trauma, or normal wear and tear. With the chiropractic treatment team at Total Spine Health and Injury Center, you can experience greater levels of pain relief, mobility, and overall wellness through comfortable, noninvasive treatment that includes chiropractic adjustments, massage therapy, and effective therapeutic rehabilitation.
